Ridstar Q20 Pro Motor FAQ & Troubleshooting

Ridstar Q20 Pro display shows an error code. What does it mean?

The Ridstar Q20 series uses specific error codes to help you diagnose problems.

  • Error 07 / Error 35 / Error 36: Motor Failure code.
  • Error 07 generally indicates a general motor fault or cable connector issue.
  • Error 35 specifically points to Motor Phase Loss: One of the three thick phase wires is disconnected or damaged inside the axle or cable.
  • Error 36 indicates a Motor Hall Sensor fault: The sensors that tell the Ridstar Q20 Pro controller how to spin the motor have failed, or the small wires are broken.

The motor cable is stripped/worn through into the wheel. Can I fix it?

Yes, but it requires careful work. If the cable has been stripped (cut) where it enters the axle, the wires are likely shorting against the metal hub. You have two options:

  1. Cable Replacement (Difficult): You can attempt to disassemble the hub motor and replace the entire wiring harness. This requires soldering and careful extraction of the old wires.
  2. Q20 Hub Motor Replacement (Recommended): Water ingress and shorts can damage the hall sensors and controller, replacing the motor is often the safer, more reliable option.

I had an accident and the motor axle broke. What now?

A broken axle is a clear sign of extreme stress. This requires a full motor replacement. Do not attempt to ride or weld the axle, as this is a critical safety component. When installing a new motor, ensure the axle nuts are torqued to spec to prevent “spinout” which can strip the axle wires or damage the dropouts.

My motor is making a grinding or clicking noise. Is the gear system damaged?

Yes, a grinding noise often points to mechanical damage inside the motor. This could be:

  • Broken Planetary Gears: The nylon or metal gears inside the hub may have sheared teeth. This is common under extreme load.
  • Bearing Failure: Worn bearings can cause the rotor to rub against the stator.
  • Magnet Debris: A magnet may have come loose and is catching on the internal components.

If you hear grinding, stop riding immediately. Continuing to ride can send metal debris through the motor, destroying the windings and potentially damaging your controller. This usually warrants a full motor replacement.

How to Replace Ridestar eBike Motor?

1. Disconnect Q20 hub motor cable from frame.
2. Remove wheel (axle nuts + derailleur/brake if rear).
3. Match wiring – Use multimeter to confirm phase/hall wire order (colors may vary).
4. Install new Ridstar motor, torque axle nuts properly.
5. Test with wheel off ground before riding.

  1. Patrick Evans –

Every Amazon listing looked generic and nobody could guarantee compatibility. This was one of the few stores that actually understood the different Ridstar motor versions.
